Influenza A and B are the two types of influenza viruses that can make people sick in large numbers. The A viruses can be divided into subtypes based on the proteins on their surface (haemagglutinin - H and neuraminidase - N), of which H1N1 and H3N2, viruses have been the most common since 1977. B viruses are less likely to cause severe disease. Influenza viruses change and mutate rapidly, giving rise to new subtypes.
