Influenza is a disease caused by the influenza virus, which is always caused by a type of influenza virus. Influenza A and B are the two types of influenza viruses that can make people sick in large numbers. The A viruses can be divided into subtypes based on the proteins on their surface (haemagglutinin - H and neuraminidase - N), of which H1N1 and H3N2, viruses have been the most common since 1977. B viruses are less likely to cause severe disease. Influenza viruses change and mutate rapidly, giving rise to new subtypes. Protection against one subtype provides little or no protection against the other, which explains the seasonal epidemics that occur each year, usually in winter.
